The Greg Sadler Review

Just like I don’t write a separate post for every interview I do on the book tour, I also don’t do one every time someone reviews my book. On the other hand, Dr. Sadler is different in that a) he’s a professional expert on my topic and b) he did both.

Dr. Gregory Sadler, PhD is a professor of philosophy with decades of teaching the classics under his belt. He’s also an important participant in the modern Stoicism space, particularly in his popular video breakdowns of complex philosophical topics. He knows a lot more than me about this topic, and so I was particularly thrilled when he graciously decided to do a full video review of my book for his Sadler’s Honest Reviews video series. I found his perspective both generous and informative, and although I reserve the right to disagree with him (as I do with, well, everyone), I deeply value his opinions:

We hadn’t really met or talked prior to that review, but afterward I reached out to thank him and discuss some of his points about my book (it’s not every day I get to talk to someone with his depth of knowledge on my topic). We decided it would make a great discussion for his separate Ideas That Matter podcast series, and it did. So here’s that discussion:

Conversations like this are exactly why I write in the first place—not to have the final word, but to be part of a discussion that’s been ongoing since the advent of literacy. I’m grateful to Dr. Sadler for taking my work seriously and engaging it with the rigor and charity philosophy deserves. I hope our exchange deepens your own thinking about the ideas at stake. That’s the real goal.
